Founder's FAQ's

My parents have always been fascinated with plants. My step father knows most trees and plants by name, and scientific names! They would collect unique plants and seeds everywhere they went. We moved quite a lot, but the plants always followed. My step father is a carpenter. Wood and plants was part of our family for as long as I can remember. We spent days wondering plantations or forests and they always found discovered something new and beautiful. My own fascination with plants only developed much later – I was too busy surfing, travelling, getting married, having 4 kids. I guess it all started when I smelt a natural perfume for the first time. I couldn’t fathom that nature could smell so good. I can’t even remember the oils used, but I knew I wanted to find out more. I did research and inspired by my friend Heidi Steck, started to investigate and explore indigenous plants. I made my own perfume and soon my own hand wash and then the rest followed.

Now, I guess it took the scenic route but the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Le Naturel’s Buchu Balm, Anti-Bug Balm, Sunscreen and Butter contain beeswax. All other Le Natural products and vegan. All of our products are environmentally friendly. Our products never gets tested on animals.

Our rich tapestry of South African flora is classified into 8 biomes, these being Grassland, Savanna, Succulent Karoo, Nama Karoo, Forest, Fynbos, Desert and Thicket. This bears testimony to the great wealth of diverse plant species, as well as the many healing plants rich in essential oils.

The Cape Floral Kingdom, one of only six floristic kingdoms in the world, is the smallest and richest per unit of area. It contains the greatest diversity of plants, with almost 70% of those being unique to this location (endemic). Travel from Clanwilliam on the West coast to Port Elizabeth on the Southeast coast in early spring for the greatest flower show on earth.

It is from this Fynbos area that most of the essential oils in our range are extracted – Cape May, Cape Chamomile, African Lemon Bush, Cape Snowbush, Cape Buchu. Others, such as the African Wormwood and Cape Geranium are sourced from the drier climes of the Free State.

The carrier oils are sourced further afield, from Limpopo, Namibia and Lesotho. Still in the Southern African region.

The plants used in the essential oils that are used in Le Naturel's products have been in use for centuries by the local indigenous people in their healing practices and rituals to bring harmony to their homes, health and family.

I wanted to create aromas that not only smell amazing but complement each of the therapeutic benefits of the ingredients. Each aroma causes a different emotion for me – all positive and uplifting but for instance the Helichrysum, African Chamomile and Lavender products have a calming and soothing effect and the Cape May, Blue Mountain Sage and Rosemary range assists in clarity and focus.

We are continually developing our range to include new and exciting products using of course only natural and indigenous ingredients. We want to collaborate with talented local artists and businesses to grow awareness of our amazing indigenous plants, South African heritage, talent and craft.
