Le Naturel in Europe: the scent of home, closer to those who miss it

It is spring in Wilderness. The fynbos on the hills above the lagoons is flowering, and on still mornings the air carries buchu and kapokbos down to the workshop. It is a smell I have lived with every day for years. I have also come to understand that many of you carry it with you when you leave.

We have heard the stories for as long as Le Naturel has existed. A Buchu Balm tucked between the gifts for a daughter in Amsterdam. A Wash and Lotion wrapped in a jersey for a brother in Berlin. A friend in Vienna who asks, every single visit, for the one that smells like the mountains. Without ever being asked, you became our quiet couriers, and we have never stopped being grateful.

Why a scent travels so far

Ask a South African living abroad what they miss, and many will name a smell before they name a place. Fynbos after the first rain. Buchu crushed underfoot on a mountain path. The warm, resinous air of a Cape slope late on a summer afternoon.

There is a reason for this. Unlike sight or sound, smell travels almost directly to the parts of the brain that hold emotion and memory. A scent does not remind you of a place so much as return you to it. One breath, and you are standing somewhere you have not stood in years.

Scent is the one thing you cannot photograph. You can send someone a picture of the mountains, but not the smell of fynbos after rain. For years, you have tried anyway, one bottle at a time.

Le Naturel Europe
